Renowned Carnatic Vocalist, Vid. N. R. Prashanth, born in 1967 is a front line artist of India and was born to Smt. and Sri. N.K. Rama Prasanna. He is known for his innovative and explorative approach to creation and expression in music. It is Prashanth’s high caliber as a performing vocalist that inspired him to develop a unique style adhering to the traditions of the great art form. Raga purity, discrete and measured use of gamakas, imaginative skills and control over laya are the hallmark of Prashanth’s music.
Prashanth began his tutelage from Vid. R.K. Padmanabha who has been instrumental in popularizing compositions Mysore Sri Vasudevacharya and Sri Vadiraja Swamy. For a short period, Prashanth was under the guidance of Vid. Titte Sri Krishna Iyengar, who was the Asthana Vidwan at the Royal Palace of Mysore. Prashanth continued his journey of learning from the very popular performer and guru, Vidu. Neela Ramgopal. Vidu. Neela Ramgopal instilled in Prashanth, a variety of compositions in Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil. Prashanth is currently learning from Prof. R. Visweswaran who is regarded as the doyen in the field of Carnatic classical music.
Prashanth is an Engineering Graduate in Instrumentation Technology from the University of Mysore. His flair and devotion to the art has brought about the musician in him. Prashanth is graded ‘B-High’ from the All India Radio (Prasar Bharthi).
Prashanth has enthralled his audiences in several National and International forums. He has performed at prestigious concert platforms in the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, etc. Prashanth is equipped to perform Eka Raga concerts. He has performed such concerts in India and abroad on several occasions.
Prashanth was a senior faculty at The Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society, Singapore, and taught Carnatic classical music from 2001 to 2007. He was promoted to the level of Master Tutor in the year 2012. Prashanth then rose to the post of Academy Registrar and served the institution from the year 2013 to 2016. He was also a Principal Tutor during these years mentoring senior students.
